Decontamination systems designed by Taurus Fabric Build and Toby Burns of Dust Collector Rentals have been designed for projects up to 5 hectares or 15 acres. The normal process is to shift a large 30m x 30m x 8m in height type shelter, working your way across the area, lifting and aerating the soil to release the volatile gases or removing the soil to be exposed to chemical or UV treatment.
Given that Sydney can have sites that are cramped with limited access, the potential to use a crane lift system, as illustrated on the left was not practical. The normal solution was to build the shelter > install the negative pressure and scrubbing equipment > treat the soil > deconstruct the shelter and equipment > move one length along > install the shelter on the adjacent ground > and repeat multiple times until the process was completed.
Taurus Fabric Build together with Dust Collector Rentals have worked on designing decontamination systems where the structure is made mobile and the decontamination equipment becomes part of the anchoring system, as well as removable anchors used where needed. The design has a full height working configuration and a reinforced travel mode with self levelling and crawl drive systems. Once the equipment and air locks are disengaged, the fabric structure can move itself over several hours, . This would give around a six hour shift time rather than several days with a full team of men plus cranes and working at heights equipment to shift a fixed fabric structure.
A full turnkey system can be provided including the fabric structure, exhaust and air movement systems and contaminant removal and treatment. Chemical scrubber systems and sniffer technology to analyse the volatile gases in every bucket of soil treated are also available. This enables treatment to be tailored to chemicals present, rather than to treat the whole area to the most damaging contaminant present.
